Hi, Great website…being able to see all the Lownds/Lowndes/Lownes around the world. My family is part of the Canadian group. We spell our name Lownds . My grandfather Matthew Russell Lownds married Helen Mary MacDonald of Antigonish in 1919 They had one son (my father) also named Matthew Russell Lownds born 1920 passed away 1993 age 72 My grandfather had one brother James who was deceased in the 1960’s. Their parents were drowned in a horse and buggy accident on a Victoria Day weekend – may have been 1918 or 1919 shortly before my grandfather married.
There are several Lownds buried in a local cemetary here in Halifax NS but I am not sure prior to the Halifax connection where the origins arise within England.

What fantastic data on the Lowndes family. My Great Grand Father was Lloyd Lowndes, Govenor of Maryland, 1896-1900. My family is from Maryland and I currently live in West Virginia. Hope I can generate some interest from the Lowndes family with ancestors of the late Govenor.

Hi,
My father, William, served in the Black Watch. I was born and educated in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where I continue to live today. I know very little about my grandfather, Amos, who, it seems comes from England. I am a writer and journalist and very curious about any Lowndes who had served under Wolfe in the Battle of Quebec. Any assistance would be appreciated.

FAO Eric Bridgwood (entry 27 above) – re Ione Claudine Chaddock Lowndes.
Hi Eric
I think we may have a link between our trees through Frank Hunter (born Franz Rudolph Hunter) who married Ione in the early 1920s. Would very much like to find out more details about Ione and her offspring.
If you see this posting please respond and I’ll give an email address.

Hi, I was married to the grand daughter of Ione Claudine Chaddock Lowndes, my ex wife:s family has a number of paintings from Ramsdell hall showing the hall and family members. I came across the site while looking into family history on her behalf as I had met with various family members over the years some of whom had lived at Ramsdell Hall.

Just found comment by Donald Lownds on the Lownds of Connecticut/Massachusetts. Wondering if these are my relatives who migrated around 1890 from England. Big in the textile business, elastic webbing and stuff.

I’ve just started to research the family tree on my maternal father’s side. My grandfather was Douglas Brodie Lowndes, born in Eccles in 1893. He had 2 daughters, Mary and Unity Barry, both of whom are deceased, so the line has ended in 2005. Douglas was the son of Alfred Barry Lowndes and Mary Brodie. He had a sister, Unity as well. They lived in Eccles. Alfred Barry was the son of Alfred Lowndes, born 1836, died 1873. He was a tailor and woolen draper, son of Peter Lowndes, also a tailor. I can’t go back any further yet. Alfred and his wife, Fanny Barry, had around 8 children, one of whom, Frederick, died in Toronto in 1918.
I’d love to hear any more about this line.

Hello fellow Lowndes,
I have literally stumbled upon th web site and this blog, but am interested in exploring these connections.
I was born in Manchester, England son of Albert Lowndes, grandson of Harold Lowndes of Blackpool. I now live in Sydney Australia. My father who now lives in Canberra, Australia has done some geneology research and I will get some details from him to contribute, but would be interested in hearing from any relatives?

Hello All,
I am one of the Lownds family that settled in Connecticut/Massachusetts, and now reside in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
I ran into an Angus Lowndes from Yellow Knife Canada years ago who was kind enough to send me a family tree that actually reflected the Lownds/Lowndes migration from England, thru the Caribbean, and into the States thru South Carolina. It went as far back as the Normans and provided a very traceable history of the families, how the name trasitioned from de Lunde ( I believe) and where and when the various families spread out through the US and Cananda. I am not sure where I put it, but does anyone else have someting like this, and as far back?
I make my way though London once a month or so (in Scotland this weekend) so if anyone would be interested in meeting, drop me an email.
Don Lownds

Anyone else see this in the Torygraph on Friday 12th October?

Mr. Secretary Lowndes’ beautiful Winslow Hall may possibly fall into the hands of the most vulgar, shallow and unworthy ex-PM I’ve ever known of.
There’s a few nice interior photos of the place – I was lucky enough to visit it with my father (Roy Lowndes from Gisborne, New Zealand) back in the 90’s, when Sir Edward Tompkins was a most charming and informative guide to the house, and very pleased to yarn with Dad about life as a senior diplomat, the War, etc.etc.
If anyone’s interested, I have a copy of the portrait of William Lowndes that hangs in the Bank of England. It’s supposed to be a faithful likeness. I also have a set of bound estate accounts for the Winslow holdings around Amersham, Bucks, dated 1927.

Clinton Lowndes | 5 September , 2007 at 7:43 pm
A big how are yeh to all the Lowndes out there. Fell on this site and tink its fab. I’m looking into my family tree on and off. Any information regarding our clan in Ireland would be great.
My full name is Clinton Nicholas Michael Lowndes. The Nicholas comes from my grandfather and the Michael from my father. Looking through the antcestors, Nicholas and Micheal seemed favorites. My grandfathers family were from North County Dublin, Swords. They owned most of the land there and like most Lowndes before them they were famers and land owners. I’ve just started doing this so, you’ll have to bare with me. According to my father, our side of the family came from Yorkshire. The real ironic thing of it is, I have being living in Leeds, Yorkshire for the last 15 years and only found this out last year. I was again told, I don’t know if this is true the it was a member of the clergy who sowed his oats in Ireland that started our side!!!! I know from reading documents that there was a Rev. Lowndes in Yorkshire!!! Now I see from what some people are saying that we are decendents of Normans, well this could be true, but again I’ve being told by my family that we were dutch royalty at one time or knights of old!!! My grandfather Nicholas Lowndes had two older brothers, I’ve yet to find out their names, they sold the land in Swords when he was young and like some Lowndes in the clan they drank and gambled most if not all the money. My grandfarther never spoke to them much after that. So, instead of being a famer he had to look for employment and found it at Dublin airport when it opened in 1936, he was one of the first employees there and remained there for the rest of his working life. If you go to the main graveyard in Swords you’ll see all the Lowndes from our clan there. There are two things I would like to know…..1 How our family got to Swords from Yorkshire and 2 How our family got to Yorkshire. Any help welcome.

Just to add another Yorkshire connection, My grandmother was a Lowndes, Alice Lowndes 1901, one of several members of the line at Bradford in Yorkshire between the 1820’s and 1990’s (although Lowndes’s were in the district much earlier).
The family tree link is at http://www.mooreline.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ml00072-000.html.
Just a couple of facts on the side, my grandmothers uncle John Lowndes worked as assistant toJohn Logie Baird (1888 – 1946) in London on experimenting with television in the 1930’s and radar during the 2nd world war, My father remembers watching the coronation of coronation of King George VI from his uncles address in London and later during/just after the war finding a room at Johns house stacked with cathode ray tubes.
In the closing scene of The Lavender Hill Mob, Alex Guinness pays for a meal for him and his arresting detective with a cheque drawn on the Loundes Bank of Rio De janeiro.

My mother was a Lowndes, born Tunstall, Staffordshire. She was the daughter of Joseph and Lucy Lowndes (Nee Latham). Joseph was the son of George and Prudence (Nee Dean) who hailed from Sanyford, just outside Tunstall.
Do we have any links on here.
I can go back further.

Hello. Wonderful web site just full of historical information. There is a small pocket of Lownds in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada dating back to just after the founding of Halifax in 1749. I am amazed at the interest in following the Lownds family tree.

Mike,
Furiously working to get ready for research trip to Philadelphia and surrounding counties for our elusive Levis connection.
Mifflin Levis (Butler Co., PA who settled in Tama Co., IA) is my husband’s direct line. I’ve found Mifflin’s father Curtis and grandfather John but am looking for more pieces to the puzzle. Tonight I found a reference in George B. Lownes will (Delaware Co, PA) which mentions Levis and Pancoast names. Especially Curtis Levis sone of Edward.
I’ll be delighted to send along my Levis results, if you think we fit into your clan. Might be too early to know that yet!
