Found this very interesting. I have recently been doing some research for a friend, Arthur B Lownes & his 3 daughters.

I beleive that I have his line, strting in Overton, Astbury Cheshire back to 1138...much further back than I have managedd to trace by birth name!
Regards Joan

RE: Facebook invitation of the Lowndes Surname: My interest is George Alan Lowndes previously CLAYTON until he took his mother's cousin's Lowndes surname and continued with the line.. He was the son of William Clayton of Lostock Hall, Lancashire and Mary Gorst---His grandfather was George Clayton and his mother was Dolly Clayton---and I have researched them extensively.

In trying to access this site that you nicely invited people to go onto, I found I was unable to join it --apparently because my last name isn't Lowndes or that I need a special invitation--not really sure but it sure didn't let me in.

I would truly like to meet up with those who are in direct descent of George Alan Clayton Lowndes and would love to share some GREAT information about George's family history--with the Clayton's...

I would like also to know if any of George's descendents are in America or if that particular line has run it's course...

Could you please email me with a comment on this?.. Surely if someone's surname is not Lowndes and you do not allow them access you may be missing out on receiving alot of information from an allied line...thank you

Cecil and Georgina Gouldsmith of Beech Grove Cirencester Glos were my Great Grandfather/mother (Pom-Pom and Ga-Ga). My grandmother was their daughter Betty, who married Peter Courage of the brewery family. They divorced, leaving 3 daughters, my mother Mary was the oldest.
To the best of my knowledge he was never an autioneer, rather he was in the dairy busines (United Daries - now defunct) in London in partnership with my God Father, Dickie Page of Sapperton Glos.
They had served together in WW1.
PP faught in the Boer War, and spent some time in Africa. Beech Grove, where I was born in '43 was full of stuffed heads etc from those days and he wrote a small book, called, I think "White Hunter"
He owned race horses, had his own silks, and was an avid polo player, and they still play for the Gouldsmith Cup at Cirencester Park.
PP died June 21, 1957, and GG died Aug 12, 1960.
I can give you lots more info if you email me directly. Unfortunately I don't have anu of the old pictures as they stayed with my Aunt Sylvia and I am currently trying to get some, or copies from her Estate.

Hi, Great website...being able to see all the Lownds/Lowndes/Lownes around the world. My family is part of the Canadian group. We spell our name Lownds . My grandfather Matthew Russell Lownds married Helen Mary MacDonald of Antigonish in 1919 They had one son (my father) also named Matthew Russell Lownds born 1920 passed away 1993 age 72 My grandfather had one brother James who was deceased in the 1960's. Their parents were drowned in a horse and buggy accident on a Victoria Day weekend - may have been 1918 or 1919 shortly before my grandfather married.

There are several Lownds buried in a local cemetary here in Halifax NS but I am not sure prior to the Halifax connection where the origins arise within England.

Just saw the note about the Matthew Lowndes vicars. My father was a Matthew Russell Lownds and his father was named Matthew Russell Lownds. My understanding is the name had been passed down by previous generations. I am curious to look back further now. The Matthew Russell stopped with my father although my brother was named Shaun Matthew in order to continue the Matthew name. I have a son who also has Matthew in his name.

I wonder if we are connected to the John who may have come to Canada. I will try to find birth records for the family.

What fantastic data on the Lowndes family. My Great Grand Father was Lloyd Lowndes, Govenor of Maryland, 1896-1900. My family is from Maryland and I currently live in West Virginia. Hope I can generate some interest from the Lowndes family with ancestors of the late Govenor.
